Western Ahmedabad Tops AMC Pet Registration Drive Numbers
Ahmedabad: Over the past last month (January 2025), 1,837 pet owners in Ahmedabad registered 2,064 pets. The numbers indicate that select owners own more than one pet. As the registrations steadily flowed in, the east-west divide was noticeable in the registration drive being conducted by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
The western region of the city, including West, Southwest and Northwest zones, has racked up 1,374 pet registrations with 1,214 pet owners. An official stated that the West Zone, spanning areas like Law Garden, Judges Bungalow, Memnagar, Vasna, Naranpura, Motera, Usmanpura, Sola Road and Ranip, lead in the registrations.
Popular breeds being registered by pet parents in Ahmedabad include shih-tzus, labradors, German shepherds, dobermans, pugs, Siberian huskys, golden retrievers, and Pomeranians. The walled city area recorded the lowest number of registrations, with 54 pets registered by 53 pet owners.
According to a senior official from the AMC, the digital registrations will continue till the end of March. Officials place the rough number of pet dogs in the city to be around 50,000, with a sizable portion of them residing in the western part of the city. Annual vaccinations and submission of the proof of vaccination is mandatory, which means pet owners will have to get their pet vaccinated regularly.
The AMC’s registration drive is being enforced in phases. In this phase, the focus is on basic online registrations, while the second phase will include the pet microchipping process and license issuance. The AMC has allocated Rs 1.8 crore towards RFID pet microchips.
The AMC is also currently developing a mobile app to ease the photo upload and verification process. A few citizens also complained about issues in paying the registration fee, as the website does not provide a receipt, forcing pet parents in the city to wait for the transaction status to be reflected on the portal. This issue is set to be solved with an aggressive campaign.
The corporation said it will issue a public notice detailing the process and carry out an awareness drive through 126 Smart City LED boards. Further, teams from AMC's cattle nuisance and control department will contact schools and colleges and conduct door-to-door surveys to ease the pet dog registration process.
