Pets at the Kumbh Mela: Saints and Their Four-Legged Companions

Prayagraj: At the Kumbh Mela, particularly in the Akhara sector, pets have found a special place amongst devotees, seers and saints.

Mahant Shravan Giri from Narsinghpur, Madhya Pradesh, shares a deep bond with his dog, Lali. He found her during the 2019 Kumbh while traveling from Prayagraj to Kashi, and she has remained a loyal companion since, guarding his camp as he engages in spiritual practices. To ensure her well-being, Mahant Giri has even arranged a health card for her medical needs.

Similarly, Mahant Tara Giri from Juna Akhara in Gurgaon shares an affectionate connection with his pet dog, Soma. Named after the day of her birth, Soma is treated with reverence. Poorna Giri, his disciple, explains that since saints often live without families, they see Soma as a child, showering her with care and respect. Soma wears a tilak and is fed only vegetarian food, with Poorna Giri admitting that more time is dedicated to grooming Soma than to herself, considering it an act of devotion.

Saints emphasize that keeping pets in akharas is a long-standing tradition. "For ages, saints have had pets," one remarked. "They are not just animals to us; they are hermits of the akhara." These pets are deeply bonded to their masters and accompany them in all aspects of their spiritual journey.

During the 2019 Kumbh, saints like Kedar Giri, Prem Giri, and Bhim Giri also brought foreign-breed dogs, who stayed with them, participating in yajnas, community feasts, and rituals alongside their masters.
