AMC Considers Recycling Non-Veg Waste For Pet Food

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is mulling over an idea to sell non-vegetarian waste it collects from slaughterhouses to companies to make pet food.

At Thursday’s meeting of AMC’s standing committee, waste disposal of the different types of waste generated in the city was discussed, with a proposal that non-veg scraps could be repurposed into pet food.

Devang Dani, Chairman of the AMC, said, “Currently, AMC processes and disposes of 1,000 metric tonnes of waste. There are plans to produce CNG from the green waste generated with a plant of 70-80 metric tonnes capacity being set up. Some companies make biscuits for dogs from non-veg waste. We have suggested that non-veg waste generated in the city could be disposed of this way, if feasible."

Answering a question, Dani said, "AMC can collect non-veg waste and give it to manufacturers. This is a concept under consideration." He also spoke about the homeless in Ahmedabad, stating, "They are seen sleeping on the streets, exposed to the chill. Orders have been given to bring them to night shelters.

"Additionally, 10 new tenders are being issued to fix waterlogging at various locations. A Rs10cr tender has been issued for the spot near Madhumalati Awas in Kathwada." He said 16 new party plots and ten new community halls are being built", he added.
