First Pet Crematoriums for Thane and Mira-Bhayender, Announces Cabinet Minister
Mira Bhayander: Thane city and Mira-Bhayender are set to get their first pet crematoriums at three locations each, announced Shiv Sena MLA and cabinet minister Pratap Sarnaik.
Following a pet show in Thane on Saturday, Saranaik addressed the media, stating that the six existing crematoriums in the cities were being upgraded to accommodate pet animal cremation, with the project being approved by the Eknath Shinde-led govt in 2023.
"We are aware of the demands being made by pet lovers from the city and have worked out a solution to ensure these animals get appropriate burial or cremation facilities within the city limits. Three crematoriums in Thane – one at Majiwada and two along Ghodbunder Road – and three others at Mira-Bhayender will see facilities for pet cremation being installed at a cost of Rs 26 lakhs each. These facilities will be operational within the next few months," said Sarnaik.
As of now, there are no such facilities in Thane. Residents of the city often have to travel to Parel in Mumbai or scour the city for locations where pets can be cremated with dignity. While official data for the same does not exist, civic officials estimate roughly 150-200 licenses are not renewed yearly in the city, which provides a rough account regarding the number of deceased pets.
