Mandatory Microchipping for Pets in Bangkok Set for 2026
Bangkok: In a move to tighten animal control and public safety, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will soon require all pet cats and dogs in the city to be registered and microchipped, with full enforcement beginning January 10, 2026.
The new regulation, which has already been published in the Royal Gazette, gives residents a window of time to bring their pets into compliance. Authorities say the measure is designed to curb the rising stray population and improve the tracking of lost or abandoned animals.
Key Requirements Under the New Law:
- Pets must be microchipped within 120 days of birth or within 30 days of being adopted.
- Families living in apartments or condos smaller than 80 square meters may keep one pet.
- Those in larger units (over 80 square meters) can keep up to two pets.
- Detached homes are allowed between two and six pets, depending on the size of the property.
- Raising livestock such as cattle or poultry will only be permitted in designated agricultural zones.
Officials explain that these steps are part of a larger strategy to reduce risks to public health and streamline pet ownership responsibilities. The system will make it easier to identify owners of strays, mistreated pets, or animals involved in public disturbances.
Special Protocols for High-Risk Breeds
Pet owners with breeds deemed potentially dangerous (like Rottweilers or pit bulls) must notify their local district office. Additional rules will apply to these animals, though specifics on those measures remain forthcoming.
While exact penalties for violations haven’t been disclosed, authorities have confirmed that enforcement will begin once the adjustment period concludes.
Veterinarians and animal rights organizations are urging pet owners not to delay and to start the process early to avoid a last-minute scramble. For the latest instructions and help with registration, residents are advised to reach out to veterinary providers or local district offices.
