From Filming Players to Joining Practice, This Robot Dog Brings Cutting-Edge tech to IPL 2025
The production value and coverage of the Tata IPL 2025 has received a big boost this year with the introduction of a Robotic dog with a camera mounted on it.
This new robotic dog can walk, jump, and walk on its hind legs like a real dog, and has a camera mounted on it. It was introduced by Danny Morrison in a video posted by the IPL’s official X account. The dog can be seem playing about with the players of teams like Mumbai Indians and Delhi capitals.
This new robotic dog is a part of the Tata IPL broadcast team. The introduction of this stainless-steel canine is no surprise considering the ever-improving and evolving nature of sports broadcasting.
As sports broadcasting evolves, fans are witnessing a revolution in how games are viewed. Whether it is cricket, F1, basketball, or football, tech upgrades like high-def visuals, ball tracking, enhanced graphics, and smarter camera systems are making coverage sharper and more immersive than ever.
That brings us to the latest innovation on the field. While the broadcast team has not disclosed exact camera specs, a close analysis of the footage gives us some clues. For the most part, the video shows the robot dog roaming around, mingling with players, and catching candid moments.
Only midway through that do we see shots from the dog’s POV, with wide-angle footage reminiscent of an action camera like a GoPro. You will catch it filming net sessions, tailing Pandya, and capturing Danny Morrison’s usual antics. These clips suggest the camera’s ideal for dynamic, up-close shots.
However, it is still unclear how prominently this footage will feature in the main IPL broadcast. More likely, it will serve to capture behind-the-scenes content, offering low-angle, ground-level shots a regular cameraman cannot easily get.
Technically speaking, close-up frames of the dog hint at a compact camera rig, mounted on what looks like a gimbal-style structure. While not confirmed, the stabilised setup points to shake-free, mobile footage, which is essential for something that is constantly on the move. There is also a second camera mounted atop its head, likely to aid in navigation and spatial awareness.
While the tech might still be finding its place in the broadcast lineup for now, its potential for unique, immersive storytelling is already clear.
