International Pet Travel into Mexico

Mexico is a beautiful country, and one worth visiting with your pet. While it does not have the most stringent import requirements, it does have a few regulations you must comply with to move your pet. Here is everything you will need to enter Mexico with your pet by your side.

Identification

If you’re entering Mexico from the United States of America, you will not require any proof of rabies vaccination or rabies titer test results.

Pet shipping to Mexico from any country other than the U.S.A, you will need to vaccinate your pet against rabies, and have proof of vaccination mentioned on their health certificate. The details of the vaccination must be mentioned on both your pet’s health certificate and vaccination record.

The rabies vaccination is the only mandatory vaccination required by Mexico for your pet to enter. While not mandatory, there are also a list of recommended vaccinations your pet should have to be safe. Here are the recommended vaccinations your pet should have before travelling.

Dogs: Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza. (+Tick treatment if needed)

Cats: Feline Panleukopenia, Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Feline Leukemia. (+Tick treatment if needed)

***Post Entry Requirements: Upon entering Mexico, you must get your pet treatment against parasites within 6 months by a licensed vet. if any parasites are discovered, your pet will be held in the medical office.

Import Documentation

Unless you’re travelling to Mexico from the U.S.A, you will require a health certificate and a vaccination record with proof of vaccination against rabies. A health certificate is issued by your vet, and is valid for 15 days, so take your pet with you for one within two weeks of your travel date

**Note: There are certain protected species which fall under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). If your pet is not a household animal i.e., dog or a cat, check and verify whether they are on the protected or endangered list. If so, you will require further permits for your international pet shipment.
