Greater Chennai Corporation to Set Up Pet Trauma Center and Pet Crematorium
Chennai: R Priya, Mayor of The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), has announced that a trauma care center for animals will be established at the pet animal care center in Kannammapet.
Being constructed at a cost of INR 25 lakh, the center will aim to provide emergency care and treatment to pets and injured animals. As of now, the GCC provides free rabies vaccinations for pet dogs and runs six veterinary hospitals to treat pet animals across the city.
However, this number will soon increase, with the GCC planning to add 10 more veterinary hospitals across zones like Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Adyar and Perungudi. The expansion is said to cost roughly INR 15 lakh.
There are also plans to establish a pet crematorium in North Chennai. According to responses gathered by the Worldwide Veterinary Service in their 2024 survey, there are roughly 180,000 stray dogs in the city. The GCC plans to vaccinate all these dogs against rabies and de-worming treatments at a cost of INR 3 crore.
