GNID Announces Roll Out of Pet Registration App
The Greater Noida Authority is set to start pet registrations in the city on their new pet registration application by December. In the meantime, it asked pet owners in Noida to not panic if they couldn’t find their pet’s breed in the drop-down menus, as the app only contained more common breeds like Labradors or German Shepherds.
To register dogs like Rottweilers or Pitbulls, which are considered to be ‘strong’ or ‘ferocious’ breeds, an option labeled ‘others’ will be available where owners of these breeds can manually enter the details necessary for registration.
“Currently, there is no breed-specific rule to prohibit/restrict registration of any animal. Instead, there are some guidelines for large breeds of dogs in the interest of other residents,” said Rajnikant Pandey, OSD, public health at GNIDA.
Both residents and pet owners in the area have questioned the decision to embark on a lengthy registration process instead of ending the practice of illegal breeding of exotic breeds.
Kaveri Rana Bhardwaj, who runs an animal shelter in Greater Noida, said, “I have taken six dogs into my shelter, which include Pitbull, American Bully, Doggo Argentino, Pakistani Bully, Indian Bully, Rottweiler, and Mastiffs. I have also adopted over 20 of them in the last two years. No complaints, no bite cases. It’s not the dog, it’s always the handler. So, the question arises: why do I keep finding so many bullies and pit bulls on the roads of Greater Noida? They are bred inside the houses. So, if the Authority plans to introduce such lengthy processes for these exotic breeds or put some restrictions on keeping them, they also need to stop these illegal breeders.
Along with pet registration being mandatory, having a proof of vaccination issued by a licensed veterinarian has also been made mandatory. Pet owners must inform the authorities about a new pet within 15 days of ownership, as well as for a transfer of ownership or a pet’s passing away. The annual registration fees for pets in Noida are INR 500, and the charges are likely to be the same in greater Noida.
In 2022, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation banned Pitbull, Rottweiler, and Dogo Argentino breeds after a series of dog bite instances across the country. They also issued a deadline for the registration of such breeds, which was on December 31, 2022. “We extended the deadline for registering the restricted dog breeds until December 31st last year, which is now closed. Now, we are taking no further registration. Pet owners found with these three breeds without registration will now be penalized and the animal moved out of the municipal limits of the city,” said a senior GMC official.
The pet registration app received a couple of hundred registrations in the meantime. Officials stated that camps would be organized soon to encourage participation.
