Guidelines for Pet Dogs in Public Park Issued by GCC Commissioner

Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has issued guidelines for pet dogs and their activities when outdoors and in parks maintained by the GCC. The guidelines come shortly after a dog attack incident, where two pet dogs mauled a 5-year-old in a corporation park on Sunday, 5 May. The GCC’s commissioner has issued address the guidelines regarding pet dogs in the parks maintained by the GCC.

Here Are the GCC Issued Guidelines for Pet Dogs in Public Parks:

  1. Park security is to be heightened.
  2. One pet owner will be allowed to take one dog inside the park.
  3. Pets allowed inside the park must be leashed and muzzled.
  4. Pets in the park should be vaccinated and should have a GCC pet license.
  5. Stray or unleashed dogs will not be allowed to enter the park.
  6. Dogs will have restricted access to the play area in the park.

"We appeal to the stakeholders, especially pet owners and activists and all concerned including civic agencies to go beyond stated legal positions and appreciate the problem caused by unrestrained animals be it pet or companion dogs or even cattle being reared depending on the streets without the owners taking the responsibilities as expected of them on prevention of cruelty to animals," stated GCC commissioner J Radhakrishnan.
