Pet Relocation Service in Mumbai

Pet Relocation Service in Mumbai

Having lived in Mumbai all their life, Shobit Dubey feels qualified enough to have an opinion on the city. All 27 years of his life prior to this were spent in the sprawling suburbs of Andheri West, and having experienced all the art, culture, history, theater, and nighttime excitement the city had to offer, he found himself yearning for change.

Wanting change, he applied to universities in his dream destination, Canada, and went through the process to be selected. Once his candidature was confirmed he was joyous, until he remembered one thing: what about my dog? he couldn’t dream of leaving his darling Beagle Rancho behind. Not wanting to burden friends or family, he decided to take Rancho along. The question was, how?

Having pondered the question for a few hours, he turned to Google for an answer, and after a few searches for pet relocators in Mumbai, he came across Carry My Pet. Having called them and met them in their office, fixed his date of departure, and quickly began his submission of paperwork. Fast forward to today, and Shobit is happily settled in Ontario with Rancho, enjoying their lives together to the fullest.

Requirements for Pet Export

Pet Microchip

A pet microchip is the only valid and recognized proof of identity a pet can have. A pet microchip is essential for all international travel, even if your destination country doesn’t necessarily require it. Your pet should get microchipped before, or at the same time as their rabies vaccination, otherwise they’ll have to be vaccinated again.

Updated Vaccination Record

The vaccination record of your pet is like your passport; it is an important document, and should be maintained and be kept up-to-date with the following details:

Further, there are a few core vaccinations that are mandatory for travel to any country overseas and are important to get done ahead of time. Basic Vaccinations for your pet are as follows:

Dog

For Dogs

Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Rabies, Leptospirosis.

For Cats

Panleukopenia, Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Rabies, Feline Leukemia.

Animal Quarantine and Certification Services in Mumbai

Animal Quarantine and Certification Services or AQCS are the government body tasked with quarantining animals. Quarantine is a necessary practice in every country, as it is used to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases and the harm they may cause. The AQCS is also in charge of providing an No Objection Certificate (NOC), without which any international movement is impossible.

The AQCS has quarantine stations throughout the country. For an AQCS center in Mumbai, you can find one at Animal Quarantine and Certification Service, Sector – 11, Koper Khairane, New Mumbai – 400709, India.

NOC

A No Objection Certificate is required before any movement into the country.

Export Grant

For export, dogs and cats require a health certificate from their respective veterinarian as well as from the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service, within seven days of export.

Pet Microchip

A standard pet microchip is accepted internationally, and is the ISO11784/11785, 15-digit chip is the currently recognized standard internationally

Vaccinations

Your pet needs to be vaccinated for rabies at least 31 days before entering the country. Other vaccinations include Distemper, Leishmaniasis, Parvovirus and Leptospirosis, especially if entering India from a high-rabies country. In case of feline companions, they are required to be vaccinated against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis Panleukopenia (FVRCP) between 30 days and 12 months prior to entering India.

Rabies Titer Test

A rabies titer test or antibody test is conducted to see whether the rabies vaccination has worked, and if your pet has developed sufficient antibodies to defend against rabies.

Health Certificate

If you are traveling from a country like the United States for example, your pet would require a Veterinary Certificate for India.

Note: All submitted documents should be in English. The rule for certificates being valid also differs from the United States to every other country; for the United States, the health certificate is valid for 30 days and for other countries, forms must be issued within 10 days of travel.

For Indian citizens, staying abroad, visiting India on a short visa would require Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) license to bring their pet in the country.

Requirements for Domestic Travel from Mumbai

Domestic movements are far less of a hassle when compared to international movements; however, there is still a process to be followed. Here’s everything you’ll need to know about the Pet Travel in Mumbai

Choosing the right size of crate is the first step before any transportation. As your pet will spend all their time inside it for the duration of the relocation, the crate must be of the correct size. Your crate must not be too large, but large enough to comfortably house your pet. Make sure to add an extra 4 inches to the calculated height of the pet so there is enough headroom and the pet is not cramped in the crate. Remember, your pet can only fly in a government-approved, IATA fiber crate, so make sure the crate you choose complies with the IATA guidelines.

Unlike an international relocation, the domestic transportation process is relatively simpler. You don’t need a titer test result or a microchip, as while these are recommended, they are not mandatory. However, there are a few requirements you need to meet from your end:

You will require your pet’s recent vaccination records, duly filled, signed, and stamped by your vet. Your pet’s vaccination record acts as their passport, and like your passport, it a document of utmost importance. It is important to keep your pet’s vaccination record up-to-date with all vaccinations dated properly and accounted for.

You will also require a veterinary health certificate. Otherwise known as a fit-to-fly certificate, it will be issued by your local veterinarian professional.

Mode of Transportation

Pet Relocation service in Mumbai and the surrounding areas can be done via three modes: by road, by rail, and by air.

Air Travel

Air travel is typically preferred in such a scenario, as it involves the least travel time while being the fastest mode. The flipside is that it is the most expensive mode out of the three. There are also the benefits of all the safety check-up procedures being conducted beforehand, avoiding a last-minute rush.

Train Travel

The second mode of transport is by train. This is a comparatively cost-effective mode of transport; however, it will include a longer travel time. In a train, you’ll have to book a whole compartment to yourselves, and take care of your pet’s rest and refreshment needs yourself.

Road Travel

Finally, there is road travel. If you’re travelling to Mumbai from, say Pune or Thane, then this is a practical option to consider. However, for longer distances, road travel can become a hassle, as you have to plan your stops and refreshments and be on the road for extended hours. Longer travel hours can have adverse effects on your furry friend’s health. Hence, you must try to use the mode of transport which best suits your needs, and has the lowest travel time.
