Air Canada Pet Policy

Air Canada is among the premier pet-friendly airlines operating out of North America. A pet-friendly airline accommodates a pet’s needs and requirements, provided you comply with a few rules and regulations.

In-Cabin Travel

If your cat or small dog can stand, turn, and lie down in their carrier, and the carrier itself fits under the seat in front of you, your pet can travel in cabin. Do inform the airline ahead of time if you plan to do so.

Your pet can’t travel in cabin if:

  • You are an unsupervised minor
  • You are sat in the bulkhead or exit row
  • You are travelling in their premium economy cabin
  • You require the use of medical apparatus which needs to be stowed under the seat

Only one dog/cat is allowed in the cabin per traveler. Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old and fully weaned prior to travel.

Pet Carrier & Crate (In-Cabin)

Your pet and their carrier are counted as the one item of carry-on baggage you are allowed to board with. Your pet must stay inside their carrier/crate for the entire duration of the flight, and it must be closed. If your pet is travelling in a carrier which is too small for them, you could be refused boarding.

Maximum permitted crate sizes are as mentioned below:

Crate Type Height Width Length
Soft Type 27 cm (10.5 in) 40 cm (15.5 in) 55 cm (21.5 in)
Hard-sided 23 cm (9 in) 40 cm (15.5 in) 55 cm (21.5 in)

**Note: Pet carriers which exceed the maximum allowable size can be transported in the checked baggage compartment, provided they weigh no more than 45 kg (100 lb), or measure more than 292 cm (115 in) in linear dimensions (length + width + height). Contact Air Canada Cargo (AC Animals) for rates and assistance in shipping larger pet carriers.

Bagge Compartment Travel

If your pet cannot fly in cabin for whatever reason, they can travel in the same flight as you, in a temperature and pressure-controlled cargo hold.

Your cat or dog can travel with you if you're travelling on:

  • A flight operated by Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge
  • An Air Canada Express flight operated by Jazz.

Pet Carrier & Crate (Baggage Compartment)

Maximum permitted carrier size - 292 cm (115 in) in linear dimensions (length + width + height).

Maximum allowable weight - Up to 45 kg (100 lb) for pet and crate combined.

  1. Please contact Air Canada Cargo (AC Animals) for rates and assistance in shipping kennels that exceed 45 kg (100 lb) in weight, or 292 cm (115 in) in linear dimensions (length + width + height).
