Abirampuram to Get its First Pet Park

Pet-In-Park-Abiramapuram-Chennai

Chennai: Owing to numerous challenges faced by pet parents in the area, Abirampuram is set to get its first pet park. With plenty of restrictions imposed on pet parents in apartment complexes and the roadside being the only other option for a walk, a pet park would be a welcome addition to the locality.

Mylapore MLA, Dha Velu, has outlined plans to convert the existing Greater Chennai Corporation Park into a pet park. Located in Demonte colony, pet parents are hoping the premises is ell-maintained and that anyone with a pet will be mindful of their pet’s behaviour before visiting the park. “Now, pets are not allowed in parks. Taking them out within apartment complexes is not encouraged. Hence, I thought a pet park would be of help. I have submitted the proposal to Greater Chennai Corporation and to the chief minister’s special projects wing,” said MLA Velu.

He said that walkers won’t be interrupted during their time in the park. “The facility will be created in the middle of the park. It will have a play area for pets, grooming space, fountain, restrooms etc. A pet consultant firm will operate and maintain it. They will rope in experts to give dogs exercises,” he said. He also said that the park would be set up under the Namakku Naame scheme. “We will hold workshops to promote responsible pet ownership and strengthen community bonds among pet owners.”

The announcement has been met with a positive reception. Shruti Vinodhraj, member, Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board, said “This is a step towards inclusivity. It will be a first for Chennai. There are many like this abroad. However, the operators should allow vaccinated pets and pet parents should muzzle aggressive pets.” Arun Prasanna G, the founder of the People for Cattle in India (PFCI), said the pet park should have enough shade. “Some pets put on weight after being in a restricted environment. Exercise facilities for pets in parks will help them stay agile. Ideally, there should be one pet park in each constituency,” he said.
